I hate doctors

I thought I would introduce my blogging with a post about blogging. I felt that might be a bit original. But i've just finished recovering from the flew, so instead, I decided to go ahead and blog about my negative passion towards doctors. Here it is.

I hate doctors. Well I don’t really hate the people who happen to be doctors, but I hate the profession. I also hate insurance, but we’ll stick to doctors for now.

When you go to professionals, you expect them to know everything concerning their profession. You expect them to be experts, to know the answers and to fix the problems. That’s what professionals do.

When your computer breaks down, you go to your IT guy. You explain the problem. He takes a look and gives you his professional advice. He details what happened and let’s you know how to prevent the problem from happening again. He let’s you know that it will take so and so time to fix it and in so and so time you get your computer back all fixed. You pay him the estimated fee and you go back to your normal life - simple, quick and professional.

Everyone runs into car troubles. When you do, you go to the professional of this area, the mechanic. You tell him what’s wrong with the car. He takes a look under the hood. He explains to you what’s going on. He estimates the cost and tells you it will take so and so time. He even gives you a replacement vehicle. Meanwhile, he fixes your car. In so and so time, you come back and pick up the car, pay the estimated fee and you go back to your normal life – predictable, convenient and professional.

But now God forbid you get sick. Your stomach hurts. You want to seek professional advice and help. You go to the doctor. Just like you do with any other professional, you explain your situation. Now the problems begin. The first thing he does is start to ask YOU questions. When it came to the mechanic, you asked him questions and he gave the answers. “What happened?” “How much will it cost” etc. But doctors, they do the asking. And the questions are not strait forward with matter of fact answers. Instead it’s something like

“What kind of stomach pain are you experiencing?”

“Umm I don’t know, severe pain?”

“Is it like your stomach is tense or is it like a burning sensation? Would you say something is piercing, or is it like a fire is breaking out?”

How are we supposed to know? Why doesn't he just do like the computer guy or the mechanic; Examin the subject of his profession and explain the situtation. He should tell me what’s the problem! Maybe he can stick a tube in or take an x-ray or something.

Instead, for some reason, he measures your heart rate and starts sticking Popsicle sticks in your mouth. I have no idea what that has to do with anything.

So, at this point, clearly he has no clue what the problem is. Instead of admitting it, after 5 minutes of probing for what you ate last week and how your bowel movement has been (we all keep these critical facts documented) he prescribes some medicine. How he reached a conclusion from my answers is a mystery.

“Ok, well I’m going to prescribe something for you. Take it once a day and let me know how it goes. If it doesn’t work, we’ll try something else”.

I could have done that myself. That’s why I came here; so I don’t have to try something else. What is this guy? Did he really go to university for 10 years to come up with this diagnosis. I mean seriously. Firstly, I booked the appointment which, of course, is nowhere near a time of my convenience. Then, I waited forever in a waiting room for him to finish whatever he does back there. And now he wants me to leave with no explanation, no peace of mind, no solution, no preventative measures and a prescription that cannot possibly work.

Then of course at some point during the week your stomach stops hurting. Now you’re just confused. Did the medication work or did my stomach just heal? How do I prevent it from happening again? What was the problem in the first place? You certainly don’t want to go back to the doctor. You got nothing out of him last time. So you just hope your stomach doesn’t hurt again and carry on with life.

So what can be said about doctors? They know as much as you could with the help of the internet. They charge more than anyone else. They study more than any other professional and make it seem that they are the highest calling there is. But in the end, they are just not the real deal. To tell you the truth, this doctor thing is making me sick, and well, here again, there is not much they can do about it :)

Loser :)

I love your text. It's excellent, even though it's full of mistakes :P Anyway, just wanted to tell you that I prefer the ending you had at first, the one you had sent me on msn, before posting it on the blog. (You know, about being glad that God is your healer?) ;) Take care!
